Euchre Glossary — What Every Term Means
The most common Euchre terms and what they mean at the table, ordered by how often you will hear them.
- Up-card
- The top card of the kitty, turned face up after the deal. Its suit is the candidate trump of the first bidding phase.
- Kitty
- The four undealt cards. The top one is turned up; after the dealer takes the up-card they discard one back into it. The rest are never played.
- Order up
- Accepting the up-card's suit as trump in the first bidding phase. The dealer then takes the card and discards.
- Maker
- A member of the team that won the bid. The makers must take at least 3 of the 5 tricks.
- Euchre (set)
- Holding the makers to fewer than 3 tricks. The defenders score 2 points.
- March
- Winning all five tricks in a hand — 2 points for the makers, 4 if going alone.
- Right bower
- The jack of the trump suit, the highest card in the game. (Bower comes from the German Bauer, "farmer" — and "jack".)
- Left bower
- The jack of the same color as trump, the second-highest card. It counts as a trump in every respect.
- Going alone
- The caller's option to play without their partner, whose cards are set face down. All five tricks score 4 points.
- Trumping in (ruffing)
- Playing a trump on a trick led in another suit because you are void in the led suit.
- Dutchman's point
- Holding the right bower, left bower and ace of trump — the three top trumps.
- Stick the dealer
- A house rule (not used by default here) forcing the dealer to name trump if everyone passes in the second phase.
